A Secret Phase

Your period may last anywhere from 3-7 days, but did you know that your period is not the only portion of your menstrual cycle? Your menstrual cycle is between 21-35 days, and it describes the sequence of events between the first day of your period and the first day of your next menstrual period. The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days. My menstrual cycle is about 25 days, while my menstrual phase, aka my period, is about 5 days.

So, if the menstrual cycle is 28 days, and a period may last around 5-7 days, what happens during the rest of the cycle? Your menstrual cycle consists of four different phases: the menstrual, follicular, ovulation, and luteal phase.

As you most likely know, your menstrual phase is the period of time in which your uterus is shedding its lining, causing you to menstruate (aka bleed). However, many do not know about the follicular phase, which begins the first day of your period and ends right before ovulation. Personally, I am happier in the days following my period, but that may also be related to the fact I am no longer bleeding and experiencing cramps. The phases of the menstrual cycle affect everybody differently, so I asked the following questions to different women to provide insight into the various ways that women experience their follicular phase.

1. Do you notice any mood changes in the days following your period? If so, what? These changes could be related to your happiness levels, your pain tolerance, your sex drive, etc.

Interviewee #1: “I am usually in a much better mood after my period because I feel less tired and more ready to take on the day.”

Interviewee #2: “I find myself happier because I’m not in pain.”

Interviewee #3: “Yes, I’m less upset and emotional and I have a higher sex drive usually.”

2. Do you notice any physical changes in the days following your period? If so, what?

Interviewee #1: “Usually after my period I feel a lot more energized. I get more motivated and more confident in my body. I feel like I just look nasty during my period and I always feel better after. In the days after my period, I feel less bloated.”

Interviewee #2: “Well, my skin usually clears up after.”

Interviewee #3: “I get clear skin after my period, but I break out before.”

It seems that these women have reached the consensus that they tend to feel happier after their period, and seem to see positive physical changes in themselves as well. So, in case you want to try something new, like hitting the pickleball courts or baking a new dessert, you may feel the most energized and excited to do this during your follicular phase. You may also feel strengthened and more confident during this phase, so it’s my personal favorite!
